What is a Clinical Pilates?

Is there a person who is healthy enough so they don’t have to get any exercise? Even though there probably is, we still haven’t met them. This is to say that most people in the world would benefit from exercising, as our lifestyles are mostly sedentary and we need more activity in our lives. We should all make an effort and be more physically active, and Pilates is a very popular form of exercise because it engages our whole bodies and makes us both flexible and strong. There is also clinical Pilates which is incredibly beneficial for people with health problems.

A brief history of Pilates

To explain it in so many words, Pilates is a functional and targeted exercise meant to help people get better control over their movements. Joseph Pilates was the ‘father’ of this form of exercise back in the time of the WW1 and he came up with it because he needed a special form of rehabilitation for injured patients who had been bound to a bed or had impaired functionally. Over the years, the method has been adapted and changed, so it has become a form of recreation and exercise rather than a form of rehabilitation. Pilates today aims to improve your core strength and stability, as well as balance. As you work out, your abdominal muscles become stronger, as well as the deep supportive muscles around your spine.

Clinical Pilates is different

While Pilates classes are held by instructors, when it comes to Clinical Pilates, these are run by fully qualified physiotherapists. If you’ve experienced an accident and are recovering from an injury at the moment, you might need physiotherapy and not classic Pilates, it’s best to consult professionals such as Movement 101. Physiotherapists will be able to asses the level of your injury and conclude what type of exercise is best for your condition, based on the injury you’re recovering from. This also means your program will be modified to suit your needs best, and most importantly, these classes count no more than 4 people per group.

If you’re feeling self-conscious

We already mentioned that the class size of clinical Pilates is different and that it counts no more than 4 people, and this is especially important for those who are feeling self-conscious. If you’re recovering from an injury and are working on getting your strength and flexibility back, it’s only natural that you don’t want a lot of people to see you work out. In addition to this, your physiotherapist will be able to change your exercise routine so that it suits you better, which means that you will not have to work on our back or shoulders if you’re feeling too sore from the previous session.

You don’t have to be injured

If you’re intrigued by clinical Pilates classes but don’t want to give it a try because you’re not injured, don’t worry – you don’t have to be in order to take part in these classes. Small class size allows you to get more attention from your instructor and as a result, you’ll be sure that you’re doing your exercise the right way. With clinical Pilates, you’ll be able to strengthen your core muscles, change your body shape, and get back in shape. Your posture will improve, as will your alignment, and you’ll be able to strengthen your whole body.

You don’t have to be sick in order to enjoy the benefits of Pilates, but keep in mind that clinical Pilates is meant for people with health problems and complications. If you’re healthy, don’t hesitate to try Pilates alone or in a group, at home or at a local gym, but if you’re looking into clinical Pilates because of your health issues, it’s best to consult a professional as well as a doctor before you start exercising.
