Senior Lifestyle – FAQ

As you are transitioning into the golden years, there are obviously many changes that you may encounter. The effect of aging can cause changes in your body, mind and lifestyle. There are many questions that elderly people may have. Here are some of them:

  • Can I regain memory performance: Aging will naturally affect memory retention, but there are many activities that can improve your memory performance. You may use tools that can help you to remember things. You may use planner app in the smartphone that notifies you when an activity is due. For old-fashioned people, a simple calendar book can be useful as well. If you want your memory performance to stay in tip-top shape, you need to ensure smooth blood flow to your brain. You shouldn’t neglect your cardiovascular health, because smooth blood flow affects your entire body, including your brain. When purchasing new appliances, make sure that they have timer functions. As an example, stove with timer could make your life more convenient and you can significantly reduce fire hazard as well.
  • Can I be more nimble: One big concern is whether you can continue to stay flexible as an elderly. Our perception about old people is that they tend to have inflexible and rigid body. Elderly can focus on their functional flexibility, so they can continue maintaining their well being. They may perform gentle exercises, such as Tai Chi and yoga to improve their flexibility. Other than making their lives more comfortable, muscle strength are also important for their flexibility. Elderly can do weight bearing exercises to strengthen their bones and muscles. It could be necessary to modify the house, so it can better accommodate your physical changes. Make sure that your home environment is functional and safer.
  • Can I get help: One way to maintain proper lifestyle is by knowing when to ask for assistance. Elderly people often have medical and physical challenge. There are various in-home care services that can give you non-medical assistances. Make sure that you can get help to accomplish your daily lifestyle. Check for assisted living communities in your areas, where trained staffs could provide various services, such as giving you daily medications and washing your clothing. Assisted living communities could also provide general classes, including fitness and art.
  • How to stay connected: Old age requires you to stay tough. The hardest thing is probably seeing your friends, family members and relatives leave, due to various reasons. You may lose touch with them or they just pass away. Many elderly people feel lonely. Solid social connections can help to increase longevity. Make sure that you can get support from friends and loved ones, especially during rougher times. Group settings should be ideal to manage feeling of loneliness. Senior centers in your area should provide social interaction and you can achieve proper mental well-being.

Adding a few years or more to your life is straightforward. You need to build a healthy body and keep your mind sharp. You should also stay connected and ask for help when necessary.
